Got compassion?

Look what happened to Judah in Lam 1:1-2…

“How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people! how is she become as a widow! she that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary! She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies.”

Got compassion? Jerusalem was getting what she deserved for following after strange gods. Does that give us a cause to kick her when she’s down, and become her enemies? What about our brothers and sisters in the Lord, and for that matter the unsaved too. Do we know what they are going through? I don’t want to make you paranoid, but has anybody said something to you degrading someone else? Chances are they say things about you when you’re not around. God hates this. God knows how to deal with His children. If we take joy in their chastisement, God may take away the very thing that would turn them back to the Lord. If someone has wronged us, we need to show compassion: the compassion of Stephen, “Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.” Or Jesus, “Father, forgive them: for they know not what they do.”

Got compassion? In these troubled times, people are under a lot of extra stress. Wen someone wrongs us we need to be more forgiving. When someone is going through the fire, we need to be more understanding and edifying. Read Psalm 22: it paints a good picture of what Jesus did on the cross for us: because He had compassion on us. Maybe we should be more like Jesus.

Phil Erickson

Pastor Phil Erickson has been the pastor of Jersey Shore Baptist Church since January of 2002. Having grown up in Ocean County, Pastor Phil has always had a burden for the south Jersey area. After graduating from Bible College in Longview, Texas, he and his family moved to Galloway Township with the vision of digging in and serving the Lord and the people of Atlantic County. Pastor Phil and Cindy Erickson have been married since 1985. They have four children and ten grandchildren. Their oldest son, Phil Jr. and his wife Katelyn are serving the Lord in Egg Harbor Twp., NJ. Their oldest daughter, Melissa, is married to Wesley Clayton who is in the Air Force and is currently stationed in New Mexico. Samantha, their third child, is married to Justin Mears and they are both serving the Lord at the church in Galloway. Hannah, the youngest, is married to Lucas McCollum, and they are also serving here in Galloway. In preparation for ministry, the Lord led him through a variety of educational experiences that have equipped him to serve the Lord and His people. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Georgian Court University, a Bachelor of Biblical Studies in Pastoral Theology from Texas Independent Baptist Seminary (formerly Texas Baptist College), a Master of Religious Education in Bible from West Coast Baptist College, and a Master of Biblical Studies from The Crown College. More recently, he completed a Graduate Certificate in Biblical Counseling and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Veritas Baptist College. He is thankful for these opportunities to study God’s Word more deeply, and counts it a privilege to use whatever knowledge the Lord has given him for the building up of His church. In addition to pastoring, the Lord has given Phil the wonderful privilege of teaching as an adjunct professor at Vision Baptist College in Berlin, NJ and Veritas Baptist College.

People are drawn and compelled by compassion and mercy, juxtaposedely they are repelled by little old judges, talebearing and sarcastic sinics. We often find the latter to be entertaining, it is hard to resist sticking a proverbial needle in someones eye, but the result is what you would expect. The next time you have a zinger keep it to yourself, write it in a notebook if you want, and instead offer a comforting comment, I know thats not normal, but we're supposed to be supernatural right?
